Backgrounds - Images

<BODY BACKGROUND=mypicture.jpg>

If you want a pattern or design as a background, rather that just a plain solid color, that isn't difficult to do.

Background images are "tiled." This means that the same picture is repeated again and again, as many times as necessary to fill the page. You can use any .gif or .jpg image for a background, but you should be careful in selecting the image you want to use, so the right and left sides look good when placed together, and likewise for the top and bottom. There are lots of places you can get free images for your background. It is also easy to make your own, if you are comfortable using a paint program.

You should normally use a background picture that is around 100 X 100 pixels. Smaller is better because of the time required for the browser to load the image from the website. Bigger is better because it allows more variation in the pattern.

It's a good idea to define a background color even if you have an image for your background. The color you specify will come up immediately, while the image is loading. If you make your background color similar to the color of your background image it will be less obvious that the image takes a while to load.
