What NOT to do

Page counters

Your website host probably offers a counter for your page. That counter is likely to be the most accurate, as what it counts is the actual loading of your page. Unfortunately, that counter will probably give you nothing but the number of visitors you have had. While that's good information, there are ways to get better information, usually free.

My favorite counter is:
This counter gives all the information about your visitors to anyone who is interested. If you don't want the information to be there for your visitors to see, you shouldn't use this one. Click on it to find out about the people wo have been here lately. You can find out what page they came from, what search words they used if they came from a search engine, and many more things. Free.

Here's another counter I sometimes use:

This one has the count available for anyone to see, it includes a guestbook, and it gives you more detailed information if you have the password. As you see, there's an ad on the counter. Click on the part about the "free counter" and you'll be told how to get your own. Free.

There's also the counter that doubles as a paid ad. I have this one on most of my pages.
Please visit our sponsors.
When someone clicks on this one I get 12 cents. I have the password, so I can get information, such as the number of visitors I've had in each of the past 60 days, which pages they visited, what browsers and operating systems they used. To get one like it for your own page, go to ValueClick and sign up. Free.

Here's a really simple one. You can make the number displayed start with whatever you want. You can use your password to find out how many hits you get on a weekly basis. Free.

FastCounter by LinkExchange

There's also the LinkExchange Banner program. You show banners for other people and they show your banner in exchange. Plus you get a count of the visitors you get every day. I have their counters on most of my pages. To see how many visitors I have had in the past 24 hours, Click here.

Click HERE to see about joining their program.
