What NOT to do

How do they do that?

When you see something on a page on the internet, it's considered acceptable to look at the source code and figure out how it was done. It is bad manners (at best) to just copy it exactly onto your page. However, seeing how it was done, and doing the same thing yourself is OK.

If you find something you can't understand, it's OK to email the webmaster and tell him/her that you would like to do that yourself but can't figure it out, and ask for an explanation.

You might get a friendly answer and explanation, or you might be ignored. As long as you ask nicely, though, go ahead and ask.

I once found something I couldn't figure out, copied the whole page, and deleted things one at a time, checking all the while to see if it still worked. I finally had tossed out everything except what was needed for the effect. I think it took me most of a day to figure it out.
